# Getting Started

This page walks you through setting up GoBTC Pay and taking your first Bitcoin payment.

Payments happen in two stages. When a customer pays, you get an **Approved** response right away and can complete the sale. The payment then settles on the Bitcoin main chain a short time later, in a batch. Because it settles directly on Bitcoin, there are no payment channels, no wrapped tokens, and no chargebacks.

By the end, you will have:

1. A merchant account.
2. A linked receiving wallet, where your Bitcoin settles.
3. A first payment, taken with a payment link or a POS terminal.

For how instant approval and on-chain settlement relate, see [Payment Lifecycle](/guides/payment-lifecycle.md).

### Step 1: Create your account

1. Sign up with your email and a password of at least 12 characters.
2. Enter the 6-digit code we emailed you to verify your address.

### Step 2: Get verified (KYB)

1. Email **<info@gobtcpay.com>** to request verification.
2. Wait for our confirmation and onboarding information.

### Step 3: Link a receiving wallet

Payments cannot be settled until you connect the wallet where your Bitcoin is received.

1. In the dashboard, open **Settings**, then the **Receiving wallet** tab<br>

2. In the GoBTC Pay app, open **Settings**, then **Merchant**, then **Link wallet**.
3. Scan the one-time QR to connect.

For details, see [Receiving Wallet and Custody](/guides/account-settings.md#receiving-wallet-and-custody).

### Step 4: Take a payment

There are two ways to take a payment: send the customer a **payment link**, or charge them in person on a **POS terminal**. Use whichever fits your business.

#### Payment link

From Home, click **New payment** to open the Payment links page, then click **Create payment link:**&#x20;

Set an amount, reference, and expiry, choose single-use or reusable, then share the URL or QR.&#x20;

See [Payment Links](/guides/payment-links.md).

#### **POS terminal**

To take payments at a counter, you set up a **store** and a **terminal**. A store represents one of your locations and holds its terminals and payments.&#x20;

1. Open **Stores** and click **Add store:**<br>

2. Enter a **Store name** (address and country are optional), then click **Create store**.
3. On the store's row, click **Manage:**<br>

4. On the **Terminals** tab, click **Add terminal:**\

5. Enter a **Terminal name** (location is optional), then click **Add terminal**.
6. Pair the terminal with the GoBTC Pay POS app.

See [Stores and POS Terminals](/stores-and-pos-terminals.md).

### Step 5: What the customer does

The customer opens the GoBTC Pay app, scans your POS QR or opens your link, reviews the amount and merchant, and approves.&#x20;

Their wallet signs the authorization, and your terminal or dashboard shows **Approved** within moments.

On-chain settlement follows in a later batch.

### Manage more than one business

Use the merchant switcher in the top bar to move between the merchant accounts your login belongs to. Each merchant has its own stores, transactions, team, and wallet.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.gobtcpay.com/getting-started.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
